The Shake Down was a culture-development and artistic-exchange project made between Rosendal Teater and the New Theatre Institute of Latvia.
Ten teenage curators from Norway and Latvia took part in a long-term mentoring programme in festival making, dramaturgy, artist relations, production and curation. Rather than being invited to advise adults, the group was given real budgets, stages and decision-making power.
The young curators made programmes for two international performing arts festivals: a programme within Homo Novus in Riga in September 2022 and a major part of Bastard in Trondheim in April 2023.
The project became an experiment in open-source instituting: asking what happens when an arts institution redistributes authorship and allows its usual procedures, priorities and rhythms to be altered by people who would normally be positioned only as audiences.
