Cairo City Lab, Choreography, Performance and the Public

13-17 April 2016, Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival, Cairo

Curated by Ahmed El Attar with Gundega Laiviņa and Alexander Roberts.

Public space was approached as a contested arena where political, social and individual forces overlap. The lab considered how traffic systems, regulations and urban design choreograph movement, and what happens when those predetermined paths are disrupted or repurposed.

The programme explored choreography and performance as strategies for engaging with public space, drawing connections between art, political practice and civil society in Cairo and beyond.
