2009

2009 is performed by a recently formed brass band of 18 year olds. The band sing, play, dance and drum as a means of exploring their complex and diverse relationships to their joint present and futures through things they’ve written and things they have been listening to.

In 2026, 18 year olds became the focus of a government-issued questionnaire in Germany surveying the willingness, skills and fitness of young people to be conscripted. It is said that the same letter will be sent again yearly to that year’s eighteen year olds. The questionnaire itself coincided with an increase in defence spending, as well as a renewed focus on conscription and preparedness for war, placing 18 year olds under the conscription spotlight.
We want to put the army of 2009 on the agenda.

The band plays stories, wishes, politics and ideas turned into songs. Through the brass band as a vessel, the work is be shaped by young people sharing things they have been listening to, as well as original things they have come up with themselves, as they collectively explore what they believe is and is not worth fighting for.
